Best Brokers, Exchanges & Prop Firms in Canada (2026)

Canada runs one of the strictest retail forex regimes in the world, and it is one of the few outside the UK with a genuine compensation fund. Only a CIRO-member investment dealer can legally solicit Canadian clients, and CIRO members carry CIPF protection up to CAD 1,000,000 if the firm fails. Quebec adds a provincial layer through the AMF. Our shortlist leads with brokers that hold a real CIRO-regulated Canadian entity, then covers strong internationally regulated names, with CAD-friendly Interac funding and honest notes on where CIPF protection does and does not apply.

Regulation in Canada

CIRO (the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, formed in 2023 by merging IIROC and the MFDA) is the national self-regulatory body that oversees forex and CFD dealers, under the provincial members of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), such as the OSC in Ontario and the AMF in Quebec. To solicit Canadian retail clients, a broker must be a CIRO-member investment dealer. Members hold client money in segregated accounts and belong to the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), which covers up to CAD 1,000,000 per account category if the firm becomes insolvent. Only a handful of brokers hold a Canadian CIRO entity. Others accept Canadian residents through international arms that carry no CIPF coverage, so the entity you onboard under matters more here than almost anywhere.

Tax Note for Canada

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) taxes forex and CFD profits as either capital gains or business income, depending on how you trade. Occasional traders may report gains as capital gains, where only 50% of the gain is taxable (the inclusion rate). Frequent, business-like trading is usually taxed as business income, where 100% is taxable at your marginal rate but losses are fully deductible against other income. There is no tax-free spread-betting route as in the UK, and crypto disposals are taxable events. Rates and brackets combine federal and provincial tax, so confirm your position with a Canadian accountant.

Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments. 74-89% of retail accounts lose money. Affiliate disclosure: how we earn.
