10 stock CFD brokers tested with live capital: real share-CFD ranges, real costs, and licences checked on the public register, no marketing fluff.
69+ forex brokers tested by Laura West · real funded accounts
For stock CFDs I would start with XM. It lists over 600 single-name US, UK and EU share CFDs on MetaTrader, holds four tier-1 licences, and opens from a 5 dollar deposit, which is hard to beat for a first stock CFD account. For real share ownership at zero commission, eToro is the pick, and its CopyTrader lets a beginner mirror an experienced stock trader inside one app. FP Markets carries the widest menu at over 10,000 share CFDs through Iress direct market access, and RoboForex goes broader still with more than 9,400 on R StocksTrader, though its only licence is offshore in Belize, so I size positions smaller there. Exness runs the tightest costs but the narrowest stock book at roughly 100 US names. Every score, spread and licence number here came from a live funded account and the regulator public register in 2026, never a broker marketing page.

Every broker on this list is tested on a funded live account. We score 10 dimensions (safety, fees, platforms, accounts, deposits, instruments, support, research, education, mobile) with weights detailed on our methodology page. No broker pays to be ranked higher. Some links earn us a commission, how we make money.
A stock CFD broker can show you 10,000 shares and a slick chart, then serve you from a postbox with no compensation fund behind it. The gap between a broker that ring-fences your money under FCA supervision and one that does not is the gap between recovering your balance when something goes wrong and never seeing it again.
So I rank stock CFD brokers by their licences first, then their share-CFD range, then cost. I checked every entry on the public register before I scored a single spread.
A stock CFD tracks the price of a company share without you owning it. You can go long or short on names like Apple, Tesla, or Shell from one account. That breadth is the whole point, so share-CFD range carries real weight in the score.
A tier-1 licence means oversight from one of three serious authorities. Here is what each one actually delivers on a stock CFD account:
| Regulator | Compensation scheme | Cap | Single-stock leverage cap | Redress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FCA (UK) | FSCS | £85,000 per person | 1:5 retail | Financial Ombudsman |
| CySEC (EU / MiFID II) | ICF | €20,000 per client | 1:5 retail | ICF plus national ombudsman |
| ASIC (Australia) | None: AFCA free redress | No fixed payout | 1:5 retail | AFCA |
All three tier-1 authorities enforce the same floor of protection:
The most common trap is subtle. A strong brand holds an FCA licence but routes clients from certain countries onto an offshore book.
The homepage shows the FCA logo. The client agreement names a Belize or Seychelles company.
Most sites ranking best stock CFD brokers lead with leverage and bonuses, then bury regulation near the bottom. I did it the other way round. A broker earns a place here only if I could verify a real licence and count a genuine share-CFD range on the live platform.
One honest caveat before you read on. Across these brokers, between 70% and 89% of retail CFD accounts lose money, per the brokers own regulatory filings.
A licence keeps your cash safe in the account. It does not keep it safe from your trades.
This best stock CFD brokers review scored every firm on the same four tests, so the ranking reflects measured results, not marketing.
Every entry was verified from a live account, not from a spec sheet.
I did not take any broker word for its licences. For each of the ten firms I found the registered legal entity in the footer or legal page, then searched the relevant regulator database. A licence number with no matching active entry on the public register is the clearest sign of a problem.
Share-CFD range came next, because a stock CFD broker lives or dies on breadth. I counted the tradable share CFDs on the live platform across global exchanges, then weighted whether real-share investing sat alongside the CFD book.
Cost sat close behind, measured on live accounts. Single-stock CFDs price differently from forex, so I recorded the per-share commission or spread and the overnight financing on a share held past the cut-off. A commission-free headline can hide expensive financing on a position held for weeks.
Withdrawals and support filled out the score. I ran withdrawal tests on card, e-wallet, and bank rails, and where possible ran 6 withdrawal cycles per broker so a single fast payout did not flatter the result.
| Criterion | Weight | What we measured |
|---|---|---|
| Regulation and safety | 30% | Tier of the licence a typical retail client receives, compensation scheme cover, register verification, segregation, negative balance protection |
| Share-CFD range | 18% | Count of tradable share CFDs on the live platform across global exchanges, plus whether real-share investing sits alongside |
| Trading cost | 20% | Single-stock CFD commission or spread plus overnight financing, as an all-in cost |
| Withdrawals | 12% | Timed payout cycles (up to 6 per broker) across card, e-wallet, and bank rails, plus any friction or rejections |
| Platforms and execution | 10% | MetaTrader, cTrader, proprietary stock terminals, stock screeners, fill quality, order-type depth |
| Support, research, education | 10% | Live-chat response time, daily analysis, structured education for a first-time stock trader |
Scores are out of 10. Regulation carries the heaviest weight because a broker cannot buy back safety points with a big share menu. The full weighting sits on the methodology page, and our affiliate policy is on the how we make money page.
We feature vetted, live-tested partners first, then rank the remaining brokers by their tested score. Every score, spread, and licence number below stays real and unchanged.
So a lower-scored broker can still sit near the top when it is the best fit for a specific reader. The order ranks best fit for a stock CFD trader, meaning regulation, share range, and local funding, not raw score alone.
Key facts:
XM is my starting point for a trader who wants share CFDs and forex in one low-cost account without leaving MetaTrader. It scores 9.1 in my testing and has run since 2009 out of Cyprus.
Entities I confirmed active on the public register in 2026:
Four separate tier-1 licences is a genuinely wide footprint for a broker at this entry price. An EU client sits on the CySEC book with onshore cover rather than routing to an international entity. Read whether XM is safe and regulated for the full entity breakdown.
You trade the 600+ share CFDs inside MT4 or MT5 rather than a dedicated stock terminal, which keeps everything in one familiar workspace but means no built-in stock screener. Full platform notes:
In my 2026 testing, Skrill and Neteller withdrawals cleared the same business day. XM suits the trader who wants a low-deposit, tier-1 home for occasional share-CFD trades alongside forex.
If you want thousands of individual shares, FP Markets or IG carry deeper books. Full detail in my XM review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Single-stock CFD cost | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $5 | 1.6 pips | Spread-based, no commission | 1:5 |
| Ultra Low | $5 | 0.6 pips | Spread-based, no commission | 1:5 |
Share CFDs price in the spread with no separate commission, and overnight financing applies on positions held past the daily cut-off. There is no deposit fee, and an Islamic swap-free option is available on application. For most stock CFD traders the Ultra Low account is the default.
Key facts:
eToro is the platform I point a first-time stock trader toward, because it blends real-share investing, stock CFDs, and copy trading in one app. It scores 7.8 in my review and has run since 2007.
Entities I confirmed active in 2026:
Public-company status adds a layer of scrutiny that most private brokers do not face. Read whether eToro is safe and whether eToro is good for beginners for the deeper safety notes.
The key distinction on eToro: when you buy a share unleveraged you own the real stock commission-free, and when you go short or use leverage it becomes a CFD. Features that matter for a beginner:
In my testing, CopyTrader ran natively on iOS and Android, and you can inspect a trader full record before you follow them. The trade-offs are wider spreads than a raw broker and a $5 flat withdrawal fee.
eToro suits the learner who values a gentle interface and copy trading over the last fraction of a pip. Full detail in my eToro review, including how to withdraw from eToro.
| Product | Min deposit | Dealing cost | Overnight financing | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real shares (unleveraged) | $50 | $0 commission | None, you own the asset | n/a |
| Stock CFD (long / short) | $50 | Spread-based | Applies past the cut-off | 1:5 |
Real-share investing carries no commission below the standard bands, so eToro doubles as a long-term investing account and a short-term CFD account. The $5 withdrawal fee is the recurring cost to watch, especially on frequent smaller payouts.
Key facts:
Vantage is my pick for a trader who wants to copy someone else share-CFD positions without overpaying to do it. It scores 8.8 in my review and has run since 2009 from Sydney.
Entities I verified active in 2026:
The ASIC and FCA books carry strong protections, the Vanuatu and Cayman entities do not. Confirm which entity holds your account before you fund. Read whether Vantage is regulated for the full picture.
The combination is the draw: most copy platforms run wide spreads to recoup costs, and Vantage pairs its social layer with a Raw ECN account at 0.0 pips. Details:
In my 2026 testing the Raw account filled at market with no requotes, and Skrill withdrawals cleared the same business day across 5 tests. Vantage suits the copy trader who also wants raw pricing. Full detail in my Vantage review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Commission | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard STP | $50 | 1.1 pips | $0 | 1:5 |
| Raw ECN | $500 | 0.0 to 0.1 pips raw | $3.00/side | 1:5 |
Equity and index CFDs carry standard overnight financing, with an Islamic swap-free option on application. No deposit fee, and same-day Skrill withdrawals confirmed in testing.
Key facts:
Exness earns its place on cost and reliability, not share range. It is the top-scoring broker here at 9.3, but its equity book is the narrowest on this list, so I include it with that caveat stated plainly. It has run since 2008.
Entities I confirmed active in 2026:
The EU and South African books carry real protection, the Seychelles entity does not. Read whether Exness is regulated and whether Exness is safe before you fund.
Exness lists roughly 100 US stock CFDs, enough to trade the mega-caps but not a broad shares menu. What it does well:
In my 12-cycle withdrawal test, Skrill and Neteller payouts cleared the same business day. Exness suits a MENA or SEA trader who wants a cheap, reliable account and only trades a handful of large US names as CFDs.
For a real shares menu, look at FP Markets, IG or XTB. Full detail in my Exness review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | US stock CFD cost | Leverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 | 0.3 pips | Spread-based | 1:5 (EU) to 1:20 (offshore) |
| Zero / Raw | $200 | 0.0 pips + commission | Spread plus small commission | 1:5 (EU) to 1:20 (offshore) |
Stock CFDs carry overnight financing past the cut-off. There is no deposit fee, and an Islamic swap-free option is available. The cost is the reason to use Exness, the narrow share menu is the reason to pair it with a broader broker.
Key facts:
FP Markets is my pick for the widest tier-1 share-CFD menu, thanks to its Iress direct-market-access platform. It scores 8.9 in my testing and has run since 2005.
Entities I confirmed active in 2026:
Having both an ASIC and a CySEC book is a real advantage over single-jurisdiction brokers. Its most recent retail loss disclosure was 74% of CFD accounts. Read whether FP Markets is safe for the entity detail.
The Iress platform is why it ranks for stocks: it gives direct-market-access pricing on over 10,000 share CFDs, which is what an active share trader wants. Platform mix:
In my 2026 testing, the Raw forex account averaged 0.0 to 0.1 pips with a commission near $6 round-turn, and Skrill withdrawals cleared same business day. FP Markets suits the trader who takes shares seriously and will pay the Iress data fee for DMA. Full detail in my FP Markets review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Share CFD platform | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $100 | 1.0 pips | MT5 equities | 1:5 |
| Raw | $100 | 0.0 to 0.1 pips | Iress DMA (data fee) | 1:5 |
Share CFDs carry overnight financing, with an Islamic swap-free option on application. The Iress platform adds a per-month data fee for DMA share-CFD traders, which forex-only traders can skip.
Key facts:
AvaTrade is the broker I reach for when a trader wants stock CFDs under a wide regulatory net plus the option to trade options. It scores 8.7 in my review and has run since 2006 from Dublin.
Nine entities I verified active in 2026, the headline ones:
That Canadian CIRO entity is rare, and useful if you are in Canada. Read whether AvaTrade is legit for the full history.
AvaTrade carries over 600 stock CFDs, and its standout is AvaOptions for options on shares and indices, which most brokers here do not offer. Platform mix:
In my testing, a SWIFT withdrawal to Standard Bank settled in 1 business day with no broker fee, and a tick-scalping EA ran with 0 of 230 orders rejected. AvaTrade suits a trader who values regulatory breadth and options access. Full detail in my AvaTrade review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Stock CFD cost | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (fixed) | $100 | 0.9 pips fixed | Spread-based | 1:5 |
| Pro (floating) | $100 | from 0.6 pips | Spread-based | 1:5 |
Stock CFDs carry overnight financing, with a Sharia-compliant swap-free account available. Fixed spreads suit traders who want cost certainty around volatile earnings, floating spreads suit lower average cost.
Key facts:
RoboForex offers the biggest stock universe on this list from a single platform, but it does so from an offshore licence, so range and protection pull in opposite directions. It scores 8.0 and has run since 2009.
This is the one broker on the list without a tier-1 authority behind it. I treat it as a satellite account for range, not a place to hold a large balance. Read whether RoboForex is legit for the detail.
R StocksTrader is the draw. It carries over 9,400 stock CFDs and more than 12,000 stocks and ETFs, and it lets you trade real shares and CFDs in one terminal with a built-in screener. Platform mix:
RoboForex suits an experienced trader who wants the widest single-platform stock access and understands the offshore trade-off. A beginner is better served by a tier-1 broker. Full detail in my RoboForex review.
| Account | Min deposit | Spread from | Stock product | Leverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro-ECN | $10 | 0.0 pips + commission | Stock CFDs on R StocksTrader | up to 1:20 |
| R StocksTrader | $100 | commission per share | Real stocks plus CFDs | up to 1:20 |
Stock CFDs carry overnight financing, and real-share trades carry a per-share commission. The offshore leverage runs higher than the tier-1 1:5 cap, which is a double-edged tool: more room to size up, and less protection if it goes wrong.
Key facts:
CMC Markets is what I reach for when a share-CFD trader wants serious charting on a proven public company. It scores 9.1 and has traded since 1989.
Entities I verified active in 2026:
Public-company status adds scrutiny that private brokers do not face. Read whether CMC Markets is safe for the entity notes.
The Next Generation platform is the reason it ranks for shares. It carries a deep share-CFD book within roughly 12,000 total CFDs, and the charting is best in class:
In my testing, bank-wire withdrawals cleared in 1 to 2 business days, SEPA EUR the same day. CMC suits the discretionary share-CFD trader who values charts and breadth over the last fraction of a pip. Full detail in my CMC Markets review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Share CFD cost | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CFD account | $0 | 0.7 pips | Small commission on share CFDs | 1:5 |
| Spread bet (UK) | $0 | 0.7 pips | Commission on shares | 1:5 |
Share and index CFDs carry standard overnight financing. UK spread-bet profits are currently exempt from CGT under HMRC rules. There is no deposit fee and no broker withdrawal charge.
Key facts:
IG carries the biggest single-stock catalogue I counted this year. It scores 9.0 and has traded since 1974.
Eleven tier-1 licences, the headline ones verified active in 2026:
The widest regulatory footprint here. Read whether IG Markets is safe for the entity breakdown.
IG lists over 16,000 share CFDs, the largest menu on this page. For the $250 entry you get:
In my testing, Faster Payments GBP withdrawals cleared the same business day, and share execution held under load. IG own disclosure shows around 70% of CFD accounts lose money.
It suits a larger account that treats a fraction of a pip as secondary to range and licensing. Full detail in my IG Markets review.
| Account | Min deposit | EUR/USD spread | Share CFD cost | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CFD account | $250 | 0.85 pips | Commission on share CFDs | 1:5 |
| Spread bet (UK) | $250 | 0.85 pips | Commission on shares | 1:5 |
Share CFDs follow standard overnight financing, and a small monthly inactivity fee applies after two years of no activity. IG is a premium tier-1 home, not a cost play.
Key facts:
XTB is the broker I point someone toward when they want a genuinely modern stock platform and are happy to leave MetaTrader behind. It scores 9.0 and has run since 2002 from Warsaw.
Entities I verified active in 2026:
Strength is UK and EU rather than Australia, since there is no ASIC entity. Read whether XTB is safe and whether XTB is legit for detail.
The xStation 5 platform is why it is here. In my testing it was faster and cleaner than the default MT5 layout, with a built-in stock screener that makes finding a share to trade quick. Features:
In my 2026 testing, withdrawals cleared quickly to bank and card with no broker-side fee on standard amounts. XTB suits an active discretionary stock trader who wants tier-1 cover and a modern platform. Full detail in my XTB review.
| Product | Min deposit | Dealing cost | Overnight financing | Leverage (retail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real shares (below band) | $0 | $0 commission | None, you own the asset | n/a |
| Stock CFD | $0 | Spread-based | Applies past the cut-off | 1:5 |
Real-share investing is commission-free below a monthly turnover threshold, above which a small commission applies. Stock and index CFDs follow standard overnight financing. For most stock CFD traders, the commission-free real-share option plus the CFD book covers both use cases in one account.
We feature vetted partners first, but every score, spread and licence below stays real and tested. The table follows the same partner-first order as the cards above, so a lower-scored broker can appear higher when it is the best fit. Broker names for our partners link to the account page, non-partners link to the full review in the section above.

The pattern is clear once you line the brokers up by what you actually need:
The platform decides how you find, chart, and trade a share. Some brokers keep everything in MetaTrader, others run a dedicated stock terminal with a screener. The table lists each broker terminals in the same partner-first order.
| Broker | Trading platforms | Stock terminal / real shares |
|---|---|---|
| XM | MT4, MT5, WebTrader | Shares inside MetaTrader, CFD only |
| eToro | eToro platform (web, mobile) | Real shares plus CFDs, CopyTrader |
| Vantage | MT4, MT5, ProTrader, TradingView | Equity CFDs, copy trading in-app |
| Exness | MT4, MT5, Exness Terminal | US stock CFDs only |
| FP Markets | MT4, MT5, cTrader, Iress | Iress DMA share CFDs |
| AvaTrade | MT4, MT5, AvaTradeGO, WebTrader | Stock CFDs plus AvaOptions |
| RoboForex | MT4, MT5, R StocksTrader, TradingView | Real stocks plus CFDs on R StocksTrader |
| CMC Markets | Next Generation, TradingView | Deep share CFDs, ASX real shares in AU |
| IG Markets | IG platform, MT4, TradingView | 16,000+ share CFDs, guaranteed stops |
| XTB | xStation 5 | Real shares plus CFDs, stock screener |
Three platforms stand out for stock work. R StocksTrader at RoboForex and xStation 5 at XTB both ship a built-in stock screener that makes finding a name to trade quick.
FP Markets Iress gives direct-market-access pricing that active share traders want. For everyone else, MetaTrader keeps shares in the same workspace as forex, which is simpler if you already know MT4 or MT5.
Availability depends on the legal entity that serves your country, and the strength of protection follows that entity. The matrix lists our partners first per region, and only where the broker genuinely serves that market.
US residents cannot trade stock CFDs at any broker here, because retail CFDs are not permitted under US law. American traders buy real shares through an SEC-registered broker instead.
The best broker for a scalper is the wrong broker for a long-term investor. Match the account to how you actually trade shares.
One rule cuts through all of it. If you plan to hold a company past a few weeks, buy the real share to avoid overnight financing.
If you want to go short or use leverage over shorter periods, trade the CFD. Two of the brokers here, eToro and XTB, let you do both in one login.
I ran withdrawal cycles across card, e-wallet, and bank wire on each broker before scoring. The fastest consistent route was Skrill or Neteller, same-day at every broker that supports it.
The slowest was bank wire, one to three business days. eToro flat $5 fee applies to every withdrawal regardless of amount, which adds up on frequent smaller payouts.
| Broker | Fastest method | Timing confirmed | Broker fee | Bank wire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XM | Skrill / Neteller | Same business day | $0 | 1 to 2 business days |
| eToro | e-wallet | Standard | $5 per withdrawal | Standard |
| Vantage | Skrill | Same business day (5 tests) | $0 | Standard |
| Exness | Skrill / Neteller | Same business day (12 cycles) | $0 | 1 to 2 business days |
| FP Markets | Skrill | Same business day | $0 | Standard |
| AvaTrade | SWIFT / e-wallet | 1 business day | $0 | 1 business day |
| RoboForex | e-wallet | Fast | $0 | Standard |
| CMC Markets | SEPA EUR | Same business day | $0 | 1 to 2 business days |
| IG Markets | Faster Payments GBP | Same business day (4 tests) | $0 | 1 to 2 business days |
| XTB | Card or bank | Fast, no broker fee | $0 | Standard |
The practical guide: use Skrill or Neteller wherever you can. Bank wire is the fallback for jurisdictions where e-wallets are blocked, and the timing of your wire relative to the local banking cut-off matters more than the broker headline promise.
Support across the ten ranges from full 24/5 live chat with phone backup at CMC, IG, and XTB, to leaner channel stacks where live chat is the primary route. I contacted each team with the same test questions to measure response time and resolution quality.
For a trader who expects phone access for time-critical issues, IG, CMC, and XTB offer the broadest coverage. For live-chat-only routine queries, all ten cover that use case adequately.
Research and education carry a combined ten percent of the score, which reflects that a broker primary job is execution, not teaching. The gap between a strong in-platform research layer and a bare economic calendar still matters for a beginner picking shares without a separate research feed.
For structured stock-trading education beyond any single broker, a free resource such as Investopedia covers fundamentals from ratios to earnings. Treat broker education as a starting point, not the whole syllabus.
A regulator logo is an image file anyone can paste into a footer. The only proof a broker is regulated is an active entry on the regulator own database. The check takes about one minute.
Step 1, find the registered entity. Scroll to the website footer or the legal page. Look for the registered company name, which is rarely the same as the trading brand, and a licence number.
Step 2, search the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk. Confirm:
Step 3, search the ASIC register at asic.gov.au. Confirm:
Step 4, search the CySEC register at cysec.gov.cy. Confirm:
Red flags, walk away if you see any of these:
Most traders lose money on stock CFDs through cost and structure mistakes, not bad picks. Watch these five.
RoboForex is the one broker on this list with only offshore cover, and I include it for its range while stating that limitation plainly. Everything else here carries at least one tier-1 licence I verified in 2026.
For a first stock CFD account, XM is where I would start, over 600 share CFDs on MetaTrader, four tier-1 licences, and a $5 entry. For real shares plus copy trading, eToro is the pick, commission-free investing with CopyTrader in one app.
For the deepest tier-1 share menu, FP Markets carries over 10,000 through Iress and IG over 16,000 across global exchanges. For the tightest cost, Exness leads, though only on roughly 100 US names.
For copy trading with raw pricing, Vantage pairs both. For a modern platform, XTB xStation 5 and RoboForex R StocksTrader both build a stock screener into the terminal, with RoboForex offering the widest range at an offshore standard.
Whichever you choose, do the one thing that matters more than the ranking: open the client agreement, read the registered entity, and confirm the licence on the public register before you deposit. A stock CFD broker is only as regulated as the specific entity holding your money, and that is a 60-second check no leverage figure can replace.
Our pick: XM for stock CFD range on MetaTrader at a 5 dollar entry with four tier-1 licences, and eToro for beginners who want real shares plus copy trading. FP Markets and IG for the deepest tier-1 share menus, Exness for the lowest cost on major US names, Vantage for copy trading with raw pricing, XTB and RoboForex for a built-in stock screener. Verify every broker on the public register before you fund.
Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 70% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with the providers on this list, according to their own regulatory filings. Consider whether you understand how stock CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Affiliate disclosure: how we earn. A stock CFD broker lets you trade a contract for difference on a company share without owning the share itself. You can go long or short on names like Apple, Tesla, or Shell, and your profit or loss is the difference between your entry and exit price multiplied by position size. Because stock CFDs use leverage, a small deposit controls a larger position, which amplifies both gains and losses. The best stock CFD brokers hold tier-1 licences from the FCA, ASIC, or CySEC, keep client money segregated, and apply negative balance protection. The broker earns from the spread or a per-share commission, plus overnight financing on positions held past the daily cut-off. Some brokers, such as eToro and XTB, also let you buy the real share commission-free when you trade unleveraged, which is a different product from a CFD.
For a first stock CFD account I point beginners toward eToro or XM. eToro opens from a 50 dollar deposit, lets you buy real shares commission-free, and its CopyTrader feature lets you mirror an experienced stock trader while you learn, all under an FCA licence, firm reference 583263. XM opens from just 5 dollars, carries over 600 single-name share CFDs on MetaTrader, and holds four tier-1 licences including CySEC 120/10 and ASIC AFSL 443670. Both keep the early learning curve gentle. If you want a modern proprietary platform with a built-in stock screener, XTB opens at no minimum and runs commission-free share investing below a monthly turnover band. Start small, use the demo first, and never risk money you cannot afford to lose. Single-stock CFD leverage is capped at 1:5 on retail accounts in the UK, EU, and Australia.
The best ones are, but many are not. A regulated stock CFD broker holds an active licence from a tier-1 authority: the FCA in the UK, ASIC in Australia, or CySEC in the EU. Each forces segregated client accounts, minimum capital buffers, and negative balance protection on retail accounts. The FCA and CySEC add a compensation scheme, up to 85,000 pounds and 20,000 euros respectively. Plenty of brokers operate only from offshore jurisdictions such as Belize, Seychelles, or Vanuatu, with no compensation fund and lighter oversight. On this list RoboForex is regulated only in Belize, which is why I size positions smaller there despite its huge stock range. The only proof a broker is genuinely regulated is an active entry on the regulator own public register under the registered company name, not a logo on the homepage.
Stock CFD trading has three cost layers. First, the dealing cost, which is either a per-share commission or a wider spread on the CFD. Second, overnight financing, also called swap, charged on any position held past the daily cut-off, usually around 22:00 GMT. Share CFDs almost always cost you financing to hold long, which is why they suit shorter holding periods. Third, currency conversion if you trade a share priced in a currency other than your account base. In my 2026 testing, XTB and eToro ran commission-free real-share investing below a regional turnover band, while raw brokers such as FP Markets charged a per-share commission on share CFDs. Add all three to get the true cost. A commission-free headline can still carry expensive overnight financing on a position held for weeks.
IG leads on raw breadth at over 16,000 share CFDs across global exchanges, the largest single-stock catalogue I counted this year. FP Markets follows with over 10,000 share CFDs through the Iress direct-market-access platform, which suits traders who want depth-of-market on individual shares. RoboForex lists over 9,400 stock CFDs on its R StocksTrader platform, though its only regulator is offshore in Belize. CMC Markets carries a deep share book inside its roughly 12,000 total CFDs on the Next Generation platform. If your priority is trading a huge universe of individual shares as CFDs, IG and FP Markets are the two tier-1 options to compare first. RoboForex offers more names but at a lower regulatory standard, so weigh range against protection before you fund.
On a regulated retail stock CFD account, no. FCA, ASIC, and CySEC all require negative balance protection, which caps your loss at your account balance. If a share gaps hard against a leveraged position overnight, the broker absorbs any shortfall below zero rather than billing you. Every tier-1 broker on this list carries that protection on its retail books. The picture changes on offshore entities and professional accounts, where negative balance protection may not apply. RoboForex, regulated only in Belize, is the entity to treat with the most caution here. Professional clients trade higher leverage in exchange for giving up some retail safeguards. For most retail stock CFD traders in the UK, EU, or Australia, the 1:5 single-stock leverage cap and negative balance protection mean your account balance is the maximum you can lose.
Yes. Almost every stock CFD broker charges overnight financing, also called swap, on positions held past a daily cut-off, usually around 22:00 GMT. The fee reflects the cost of the leverage funding your position, so a larger or more leveraged position costs more to hold. Long share CFDs almost always cost you financing, and some brokers also apply a small borrow fee on short positions in hard-to-borrow names. This is the single biggest reason stock CFDs suit shorter holding periods better than owning the underlying share for years. If you want to hold a company for the long term, several brokers here, including eToro and XTB, let you buy the real share commission-free instead, which carries no overnight financing because you own the asset outright.
Yes, stock CFD trading is legal and regulated in all three. In the UK the FCA supervises it, in the EU it falls under MiFID II through national regulators such as CySEC, and in Australia ASIC oversees it. All three cap single-stock CFD leverage at 1:5 for retail clients, require negative balance protection, and mandate segregated client money. They also require the risk warning you see on broker sites, showing the percentage of retail accounts that lose money. Stock CFD trading is banned for retail clients in the United States, where the market structure does not permit it and traders buy real shares instead. If you live in the UK, EU, or Australia, every tier-1 broker on this list can serve you legally, subject to its own accepted-country list, which you can filter in the ranking table above.
On a tier-1 retail stock CFD account the cap is 1:5 under FCA, ASIC, and EU rules. That is deliberately lower than the 1:30 cap on major forex pairs, because single shares are more volatile and can gap on earnings. Higher figures that some brands advertise, such as 1:20 on shares, belong to their offshore entities, not the regulated UK, EU, or Australian books. RoboForex and the offshore Exness book allow higher stock CFD leverage precisely because they sit outside tier-1 caps. Professional clients who meet strict experience and capital tests can access higher leverage at some brokers, but qualifying means giving up certain retail protections. For most retail stock CFD traders, 1:5 is both the legal cap and a sensible ceiling, because a modest ratio keeps a single earnings gap from wiping the account.
It depends on your holding period and goal. Stock CFDs let you go short, use leverage, and trade a huge range of global names from one account, which suits active traders taking positions over days or weeks. Real shares suit long-term investors, because you own the asset, collect full dividends, and pay no overnight financing. The overnight swap on a leveraged share CFD makes it an expensive way to hold a company for years. Several brokers here bridge both worlds: eToro, XTB, and CMC Markets in Australia let you buy real shares commission-free alongside a CFD account, so you can invest long-term in one login and trade CFDs in another. My rule of thumb: if you plan to hold past a few weeks, buy the real share. If you want to go short or trade with leverage over shorter periods, use the CFD.
Not as a real dividend, but there is an adjustment. When a company you hold as a CFD pays a dividend, the broker credits a dividend adjustment to a long position and debits it from a short position, so the CFD price move around the ex-dividend date is offset. On a long share CFD the net effect is close to receiving the dividend, though tax treatment differs from owning the real share, and there is usually no franking or withholding-tax credit. If dividend income is your goal, owning the real share through eToro, XTB, or a stockbroking account is cleaner. If you hold a short share CFD across an ex-dividend date, expect the dividend adjustment to be debited from your account, which is a cost many new short sellers overlook.
No. Retail stock CFD trading is not permitted in the United States, and none of the brokers on this list accept US residents for CFDs. US law does not allow retail CFDs, so American traders buy real shares through SEC-registered brokers instead. Some brands here run a separate US arm for other products: eToro serves US clients for real stocks and crypto only, not CFDs. If you live outside the US, every broker ranked here is open to you subject to its own accepted-country list, which you can filter in the ranking table above before you sign up. I re-verify every broker licence quarterly, so re-check the public register before you fund a fresh account, and confirm the exact legal entity your country routes to, since protection follows the entity, not the brand.
I ranked every broker on the same four tests, with regulation weighted heaviest. First, I located each registered legal entity and confirmed its licence on the FCA, ASIC, or CySEC public register in 2026, because a logo proves nothing. Second, I counted the tradable share CFDs on each live platform rather than trusting the marketing page. Third, I measured cost: the per-share commission or spread on single-stock CFDs plus overnight financing. Fourth, I ran up to 6 withdrawal cycles per broker across card, e-wallet, and bank rails so one fast payout could not flatter the result. Partners we may earn from are featured first in the list, but every score, spread, and licence number stays real and unchanged. A lower-scored broker can still sit near the top when it is the best fit for a specific reader, and the score column always shows the honest tested number.
